CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLIST SAFETY PROGRAM (CMSP)

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is statutorily responsible for California’s official motorcyclist safety and training program. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code Sections 2930-2935, the CHP administers the CMSP through a primary contractor, currently Total Control Training Inc. As of 2019, over 1,200,000 motorcycle riders have received training at one of the CMSP’s many training sites since the program began in July 1987.

The Motorcyclist Training Course (MTC) is a 15 hour course which includes 5 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of actual riding. The MTC is mandatory for those under the age of 21, but is also recommended to those 21 and older who are seeking to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their California driver’s license.

Yes, in fact we encourage you to.  Must not have been in a crash, visible damage, no more than five years old and at least a ¾ helmet.  You will be provided a helmet if you do not have one.

No, we have plenty of gloves for you to borrow ranging in sizes from extra small to double extra large.

No, they are not sturdy and will not provide proper protection for the motorcycle. (No exceptions!!)

Absolutely.  You are encouraged to wear rain gear, dress in layers and even bring changes of clothes.

If you are unsure if your gear is suitable for class or would like a pre-inspection by your Instructor then we encourage you to do so.

They must be sturdy, over the ankle boots and must cover at least your ankle bone. No exceptions!  If you are concerned they may not qualify you can bring them to your first classroom session for inspection by your Instructor.

Yes, you will be required to take a written test and pay a fee at the DMV to obtain your Motorcycle (M1) Endorsement and reissuance of your  California Driver’s license.

No.  Others in class may not wish to be photographed.  Also, Total Control Inc is the sole proprietor of the licensed curriculum (MTC). Therefore, unauthorized photography or recording of any kind while class is in session, is strictly prohibited. We encourage photos before or after class or during one of the many breaks throughout the day.

You will have to contact Total Control Training Inc. less than 12 months after passing your course to obtain a replacement copy.

Yes, long sleeves are all that is required.  However, we encourage safety-minded motorcycle gear and always consider the sport you are about to attend.

Yes, we encourage you to.  They must be street motorcycle specific and full fingered with no holes or tears.

No, they are designed for working on hot engine parts, not for the sport of motorcycling.

Yes, if you need prescription glasses to see, we encourage you to do so.  Also, you may want to consider sunglasses if it’s going to be a sunny day as you may wear those in the helmet as well.

No, we encourage you to be comfortable in the classroom setting but PLEASE dress respectfully.

No. If you have successfully completed your class, the riding examination is waived.

Every State has different licensing requirements and procedures, we encourage you to call your State’s licensing entity before you sign up for class.

Yes, if they stay clear of the training area. However, please remember that some people do get nervous when taking a test and may not want spectators.

You have one calendar year to obtain your motorcycle (M1) endorsement from the State of California.  If it has expired you will not be issued another, and you must retake the class to obtain a new one.  You may also take the One Day Premier Course (if offered) instead of the entire basic course.
